Bio

The Irish brogue of James J. Hogan would yell, "Hard, Yale! Hard! Harder, Yale!" Hogan was born in County Tipperary, Ireland and became one of the greatest of Old Blue linemen and its inspirational force during the early years at the turn of the 20th Century. He became so much a part of Bulldog athletics that his classmates nicknamed him "Yale". Hogan was broad-shouldered at 5-10 and 210-pounds. He had a powerful leg-drive and hit into the line like a hammer. He was often used as a ball-carrier on the old tackle-back play. Hogan lettered four years, was consensus All-America three times and captain in 1904. Yale's record in his four years was 11-1-1, 11-0-1, 11-1, 10-1. Totaling 43-3-2. Hogan was a Yale track standout also, and a top scholar who headed the debating team. On leaving Yale, he entered Columbia Law School and set up a practice in 1908. Two years later, Hogan died - a victim of Bright's disease.
