Bio

Larry Bettencourt and Hall of Fame coach Slip Madigan helped lift tiny St. Mary's College of Moraga, California to national prominence. The defensive play of the "Galloping Gaels" was astounding, in Bettencourt's four varsity seasons, St. Mary's registered 19 shutouts. Bettencourt became a master at rushing the punter and, during his four-year varsity career, scored 12 touchdowns, most of them on blocked kicks. As a senior center in 1927 he blocked punts in six straight games. Offensively his play was equally as fierce, as he opened up gaping holes in enemy lines. He was a third-team All-America in 1926 and a consensus pick in 1927. In four years, St. Mary's posted a 33-5-2 record.
