Ronald Gerard Beagle

BIO

Ron Beagle starred in a time when end was an all-around, 60-minute position. He was a tremendous blocker, played defense and caught passes for Navy. In three years, 1953-55, he caught 64 passes, mostly from eventual Hall of Fame coach George Welsh, and scored eight touchdowns. He was All-America twice, unanimous in 1955, and won the Maxwell Trophy in 1954. He also was All-America in lacrosse. After graduation he served in the Marines and then went into business in Sacramento, California. Ron married a Navy nurse, Jo Ann Jones. Their daughter, Ronda, graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1984. The Beagles were one of the first families with a father and daughter who were graduates of the Academy. There was another remarkable chapter in his life. Two men, nine years apart, came from the same high school (Purcell in Cincinnati), played college football at the same school (Navy), won the Maxwell Trophy, made All-America, and eventually were inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. It happened only once, and the two men were Ron Beagle and Roger Staubach.
