Lynn Swann

Bio

Lynn Swann's role in Southern California football was described by his coach, John McKay: "We ask Lynn to do many things, and he excels in all." In his career, he caught 85 passes and averaged 17 yards on each. He returned 48 punts and had long gains of 92, 73, 57, 54, and 50 yards. Swann rushed 25 times with a 7.9 average. In 1972, he made the All-America Blockers Team picked by the Chattanooga Times. In 1973, he was a consensus All-America wide receiver and won the Pop Warner Award as best senior player on the Pacific Coast. His best play was a high, leaping, spearing catch in the 1973 Stanford game. Coach McKay said: "He has speed, soft hands, and grace." Swann played for the Pittsburgh Steelers 1974-1982, was on four Super Bowl winners and Most Valuable Player in the Super Bowl following the 1975 season. While a college senior he made speeches to youth groups. ABC Sports hired him part-time while he was still a pro footballer, full time after 1982. Among his awards: NFL "Man of the Year" for community service; and Merit Award from Southern California Alumni Association. Swan came from Serra High School, where he ran a 9.8 in the 100-yard dash, state champ in the long jump, and honor student.
