Bio

In the great history of Georgia Tech football, Randy Rhino was the first Yellow Jacket to be a three-time All-America. While a member of the freshman team, Rhino was a running back, when one day an assistant coach suggested that he move to defense. At that point in his career Rhino bought the idea, "What did I know? I just wanted to make the varsity." Joining the varsity in 1972, Rhino collected eight interceptions averaging 21.4 yards per return. Against Rice he had three interceptions in one game. He also made 72 tackles, ten of which saved touchdowns. Randy was a valuable special team performer as his experience as a running back helped him lead the nation in punt return average with a 17.6 average, including one return that went for a 96-yard touchdown. His performance led to his gaining first-team All-America honors. As a junior, Rhino improved his All-America status to that of a consensus choice and repeated as a first-team pick in his 1974 senior season for Coach Pepper Rodgers. His single season mark of 441 punt return yards was a school record until it was broken by his son, Kelley Rhino. Tech football runs deep in the Rhino family as Randy's father, Chappell played on the 1952 national championship team and his brother, Danny played in the mid 1970's. Randy played five years in the Canadian League gaining All-Pro status three times.
