Bio

At 6-4 in height, and 200 pounds in weight, Harvard tackle Hamilton Fish was large for his era. He became acting captain of the 1908 team when the elected captain was injured. The Crimson went 9-0-1 that year and won the national championship. He was the elected captain of the 1909 team. Fish was a consensus All-America twice, and in 1923 Walter Camp named him to his all-time All-America team. The Fish family story is one of great service. First came Nicholas Fish, a colonel in George Washington's army. His son, Hamilton, was in the U.S. House of Representatives 1843-45, then governor of New York. Next came another Hamilton Fish, serving in Congress 1909-11. Hamilton Fish, the Hall of Fame football player, commanded an all-black regiment in World War I. This unit was brilliant in combat, and its story was told in the 1977 movie, "Men of Bronze." Fish was national commander of the American Legion and was a representative in Congress from his New York district 1919-45. He died January 18, 1991, at age 102.
