Bio

Francis Gordon Brown is one of only a handful of men to be recognized as a four-time first-team All-America. Playing guard from 1897-1900, Brown was an All-America during the same four-year period that Truxton Hare of Pennsylvania was a four-time All-America at the other guard position. Brown captained the 1900 Yale squad observers called "The Team of the Century." The Bulldogs posted a 12-0 record which included ten shutouts. In the final game of the season, Yale rushed for 555 yards in a 28-0 win over Harvard. Seven of the 11 starters were named to the All-America team as Yale outscored its opposition 336- 10. After naming him to his 1898 All-America team, Walter Camp wrote this of "Skim" Brown: "So far as the proper duties of the guard position are concerned, there was no man who could perform them better. In defensive work and in opening holes in the opposing line, he was at the top of his class. He is, in short, thoroughly experienced and extraordinarily well-equipped guard." Off the field, Gordon was an academic leader with Phi Beta Kappa credentials. Following graduation, he entered the banking business. Gordon Brown died of diabetes in 1911 at the age of 31.
