Bio

Frank Carideo quarterbacked Knute Rockne's last two Notre Dame teams, 1929- 30, and was a unanimous All-America both years. He stood 5-7, weighed 175, and was known for his signal-calling, passing, punting, and defensive play. Against Army in 1929 he punted 11 times, and six times the ball was downed inside the three-yard line. Against Northwestern in 1930 he punted four times in the fourth quarter, and all four kicks were downed on the one-yard line. Against Navy in 1929, he completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jack Elder while being knocked on his back. His scoring plays included a 75-yard punt return against Georgia Tech and 85-yard pass interception run against Northwestern in 1929, a 70-yard pass interception run against Southern Methodist in 1930. Carideo was assistant coach at Purdue, 1931, head coach Missouri 1932-34, assistant at Mississippi State 1936-38, and at Iowa 1939-42, 1946-49. He was a lieutenant in the Navy between Iowa assignments. He moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was in the insurance business 1950-71. In 1969, the veteran Chicago sports writer, Warren Brown, wrote: "Carideo is the best quarterback I ever saw."
