Bio

Charlie Richard was raised on a Missouri dairy farm where his tireless work ethic was developed. In high school, he was his class valedictorian. At William Jewel College, he was the team’s quarterback, leading the Cardinals to a 9-1 record as a senior. After head coaching stints on the high school and community college levels he became a collegiate assistant. In 1980, he moved to Baker, where he built the Wildcats into one of the top small college programs in America. Charlie was an immediate success as his first team went 9-0-1 in the regular season. He led Baker to 11 conference titles, five NAIA final fours and one national championship appearance. His teams finished among the top 20 NAIA teams in the nation every season but one. Due to health concerns, he sat out the 1991 season but returned next year. During a recruiting meeting with his coaches preparing for the 1995 season, he collapsed and died from a heart attack.
