Warren Woodson

Bio

Warren Brooks Woodson began his coaching career by leading four sports at Texarkana Junior College 1927-1934 and, in three of the same years also coached three sports at a nearby high school. Conway Teachers (now Central Arkansas) had him 1935-1940. His 1936 team was 8-0. He was at Hardin-Simmons 1941-1951 except for three years as a lieutenant commander in the Navy. His 1946 team was 11-0; his 1948 team was in three bowls - the Grape Bowl, a 35-35 tie with the College of the Pacific; the Shrine Bowl Dec. 18,a 40-12 victory over Ouachita Baptist; and the Camelia Bowl Dec. 30, a 49-12 victory over Wichita. Woodson coached Arizona 1952-1956 and New Mexico State 1958-1967. His 1960 team went 11-0. He was head coach at Trinity (TX) 1972-1973 and later was consultant at New Mexico Highlands. His record at four-year colleges was 203-95-14, and he also won 52 games in junior college and 18 in high school. He coached players who won the national rushing title nine times. These players were: at Hardin-Simmons, Rudolph Mobley, 1942,1946, Wilton Davis, 1947; at Arizona, Art Luppino, 1954,1955; at New Mexico State, Pervis Atkins, 1959, Bob Gaiters, 1960 Jim Pilot, 1961, 1962. Besides football, he won many championships with his teams in basketball, track, and tennis.
