Dan Devine

Bio

Dan Devine coached 22 years with a record of 172-57-9, a winning percentage of .742. He played quarterback for Minnesota-Duluth in 1946-47. His first coaching job was at East Jordan, Michigan, High School, in 1948-49. His teams had a 16-0 record. Devine served as an assistant coach at Michigan State University 1950-53. In 1955, he became head coach at Arizona State University. In three years there, 1955-57, his record was 27-3-1. He served as Missouri coach, 1958-70, with a record of 92-38-7. Nine of his 13 teams finished in the top 20. His teams won in the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl, and Bluebonnet Bowl. Devine moved to the pros. He was general manager and coach of the Green Bay Packers, 1971-1974. His four-year record was 25-27-4. Devine returned to the college level as Notre Dame coach, 1975-80. His six-year record was 53-16-1. His 1977 team went 11-1 and was national champion. Notre Dame won the national title by beating previously unbeaten Texas in the Cotton Bowl 38-10. In 1978, his team was 9-3 and went to the Cotton Bowl again. Notre Dame was down 22 points with eight minutes to play, rallied and beat Houston 35-34. Joe Montana threw four touchdown passes in the rally.
