Max Starcevich

Bio

From the iron-mining region of Minnesota to the steel mills of Gary, Indiana to the University of Washington to induction into the College Football Hall of Fame: that is the road Max Starcevich traveled. He played high school football in Duluth worked two years in a steel mill in Gary, and went back to Duluth for a year of junior college. Next stop: Seattle and the University of Washington. He was fullback, then a tackle, finally a guard. At that position he made consensus All-America in 1936 and led Washington to the Rose Bowl. He played in the 1937 College All-Star Game and helped the college team upset the Green Bay Packers 6-0. Starcevich spent 36 years in the Seattle school system as teacher, coach and high school principal. He officiated football and basketball 20 years. Max was an officer in the Audubon Society and a leader in conversation work.
