Leroy Mercer

Bio

Destined to become a respected surgeon, Lee Mercer first made a reputation operating on enemy defenses as one of the University of Pennsylvania's outstanding running backs. A world class broad jumper in track and field, Mercer used his speed and leaping ability to unique advantage. As a sophomore, he led Penn to the eastern championship in 1910, and then served as the Quaker captain for the next two seasons. During his career, the 5-11, 175-pound Mercer helped the Quakers to victories in 23 of their 33 games. Mercer was a two-time consensus All-America. As a senior, Mercer was named to the United States Olympic team and participated in the broad jump. He received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1913 and launched a distinguished career as a physician and educator. He went first to Swarthmore College as Athletic Director and professor of Physical Education, then returned to Penn for 22 years of service as the Director and Dean of the Physical Education Department. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Mercer never waned in his dedication to physical fitness and football. He frequently proclaimed the values of the sport and was quick to encourage young men to participate in the game.
