Bio

Harry K. "Cy" Young attended three colleges and played varsity football for two of them. He played at Marshall 1910-11. On Nov. 2, 1910, he kicked three field goals as Marshall beat Glenville 9-0. Marshall's record in his time was 9-2-2. In the spring of 1912 he was the left fielder and captain of the Marshall baseball team. In the fall of 1912 he attended the University of Michigan and was on the freshman football team. He switched to Washington and Lee and was on the football team, 1913-1916. He won 16 letters at Washington and Lee and as a senior was captain of four teams, football, basketball, baseball and track. He was an honor student and president of the senior class. W & L had a 29-4-3 record in his time. The 1913 team was 8-1 and outscored opponents 200-7. Young had 54 points on touchdowns and extra points. In 1914, W&L went 9-0, outscored opponents 313-12. Young scored 67 points. In 1916, he had touchdown runs of 80 and 60 yards. He averaged 50 yards on punts for four years. In 1914 and 1915 W&L played his old school, Marshall, and won 34-0 and 27-0. In 1914, W&L tied Indiana 7-7. In 1915 W & L beat Navy 10-0, tied Georgia Tech 7-7- and lost to Army 13-7. Young was in the Army in World War I, 1917-1918. He was in the lumber business in Helena, Arkansas, 1919-28. Then he returned to college life with these jobs: 1930-33, baseball coach, William & Mary; 1934-39, basketball coach, Washington & Lee; 1939-58, alumni secretary, Washington & Lee.
