Dixie Howell

Bio

One of the brightest stars in Alabama football history is Dixie Howell, the throwing threat of the famed "Howell-to-Hutson" passing combination. He combined with Don Hutson in leading the Crimson Tide over Stanford in the 1935 Rose Bowl game. In scoring the Tide's first touchdown, Howell bolted over from the five, doing a complete somersault and landing on his feet to score. He added a 67-yard touchdown run and threw a TD pass to Hutson. Mark Kelly, a Los Angeles sportswriter wrote: " Open that page once more in The Book of Football Revelations and under these names - Dorais to Rockne, Wyman to Baston, Friedman to Oosterbaan - add to those Howell to Hutson.. And let the last stay in capital letters because they should top the list." Howell accounted for 160 yards passing, 79 rushing, 74 on kick returns - a total of 313. He completed five passes to Hutson and two to Bear Bryant. Howell made an 80-yard run against Vanderbilt in 1932, had punts of 89, 83, 80 yards in 1933. Howell played one year with the Washington Redskins, 1937. He coached Arizona State 1937-41 with a 20-9-4 record and Idaho 1947-50 with a 13-20-1 record.
