Bo Schembechler

Bio

Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler was born April 1, 1929, Barberton, Ohio, and early in life he a great interest in football. His grade school did not have a team and Bo, in the 7th and 8th grades, practiced with the high school. After Barberton, he played tackle at Miami of Ohio, 1948-1950. He was an assistant coach at Presbyterian, 1954, Bowling Green 1955, Northwestern, 1956-57, and Ohio State 1958-62. Then he became head coach at Miami, 1963-68. He won two Mid-American Conference championships and had a 40-17-3 record. Schembechler coached Michigan 1969-89 with a 194-48-5 total. His combined record was 234-65-8, a winning percentage of .775. When he retired, his 234 victories were fifth best all-time among coaches of division I-A (FBS) teams. His first Michigan team, in 1969, stunned Ohio State 24-12, ending the Buckeyes' 22-game winning streak. He was voted Coach of the Year in 1969. In 21 years at Michigan he won 13 Big Ten championships and was in 17 bowls. He was Michigan's director of athletics in 1988-90 and served the Detroit Tigers, as president 1991-92. His nickname for a lifetime was "Bo"; he was given that term by his sister who was trying to say "brother."
