Banks McFadden

Bio

Banks McFadden's varsity "V" could have stood for "versatility". Never before had the state of South Carolina known an athlete with more varied abilities. Football, basketball, track and field - he excelled in each. In 1938, he drew All-America basketball recognition. The next year, he did so again, this time adding All-America football laurels and becoming South Carolina's first athlete to receive the double All-America recognition. In football, McFadden, led his team to the Southern Conference championship in 1939. Clemson also beat Boston College in the Cotton Bowl. In basketball, McFadden led Clemson to the conference title in 1939. In track, he competed in the state college meet and won the high hurdles, low hurdles and long jump, was third in the shot and ran on the winning mile relay team. In a dual meet with Presbyterian he won five events -shot, discus, long jump and both hurdles. He played one year of pro football with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was the second highest scorer in the NFL. In World War II, he was a major in the Army Air Corps. McFadden later served as backfield coach and head basketball coach at Clemson. In a ceremony September 19, 1987, Clemson retired his basketball No. 23 and football No. 66.
